Survivor

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

We get a lot of cyclists during the summer. Ron rolled up for a short two-day visit. Ron is a “Baby Boomer” from Indiana (as in Jones) U.S.A.

He’s an aircraft? Mechanic by profession; a British resident by choice;? a cancer survivor by grace. He is a permanent resident of the United Kingdom being married to a British National since his universiy days. He loves living in the UK for two quite disparate reasons.

The first is the excellent universal free health care provided in Britian and the second is his loathing of certain American right-wing polititians.

He has spent the past few months cycling around the U.S. to see if things have changed and to scope out career opportunities. Suffice to say he has opted to return to England.

Perhaps it has been the cancer treatments (six years in remission) that give him a thin, gaunt, sallow apearance offset by his long hair. But once he dons his cycling gear you can see his powerful legs from years of bike riding. It almost seems as if he could kickstart the engines of the jet aircraft he works on.

ANZAC

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

ANZAC Day – 25 April – marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War at Gallipoli.

The acronym (ANZAC) stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers quickly became known as ANZACs themselves. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and ANZAC Day remains one of Australia and New Zealand’s most important national occasions.

This year an Australian Rugby team got together with a local Toronto Bar to create a time for Australians and New Zealanders to meet. The night was a hit with all the people from the hostel, (especially the Aussies and Kiwis who had a chance to hear some familiar accents).

Great night had by everyone. Around 40 people from the hostel, from all over the world went to the get together and were lucky enough to receive free prizes of Adidas clothes, flags, boxer shorts and more.

Thanks lads for putting on a great night.

Bye for Now Lassies!

Monday, May 7th, 2007

The warm spring weather has finally arrived lifting everyone’s spirit after a particularly cold and nasty February. In fact, it was the coldest February in almost three decades! Still, all is not well here at the Canadiana. We lost two bonnie wee lassies today.

Jennifer (or Jenn) from Kinross had been with us for a little over two months. She’s an old friend of Mitch (also from Kinross) who is? founding member of the legendary Canadiana “Lager Louts”. Jenn was joined here by Sarah a childhood friend about a month ago.?

Sarah also grew up with Mitch (the operative word here is “grew up” something the Double L’s steadfastly refuse to do) and I believe he calls her “Barnes”.

Anyhow, the two bonnie wee lassies have found a flat in downtown Toronto. It is in an area known as the “Gay Village” and is just off Yonge Street – Toronto’s main North-South artery and longest street in the world. (about 1200 miles long) It’s a safe and trendy area – so good choice lassies!

The “Village” as it is often called is full of Bistros, Coffee Bars, Night Clubs, restaurants with ambiance? as well as? chic specialty stores and boutiques. All in all, quite a pleasant part of the inner city. It is close to the posh shops of the Bloor Street? / Yorkville area; the favourite Toronto haunts of A-list movie stars.

So we took one last photo of the two lassies before they left for their new apartment and now the hostel is just a little bit less beautiful than it was yesterday. But remember lassies, you’re always welcome to visit! See you on Karaoke night, perhaps??

Age of Majority

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Remember the entry about young Ben from Bath? (the Bath near Bristol – not the one down the hall) Well, Ben is now legal here in Canada – legal drinking age, that is. He just celebrated his 19th birthday and may now imbibe a brew or two at the local pub!

The ? legal drinking age used to be for those who were 21 years of age. About three decades ago, they changed it? to eighteen. Big mistake!

You see, the last year of high school is populated with eighteen year olds. What happened was that students were returning to school after lunch quite legally tipsy! That forced a rethink in determining the legal drinking age in Canada. They bumped it up to nineteen!

So Ben turned 19 and there was a bit of a celebration here at the hostel. His friends (and he has quite a few of them here at the Canadiana) ? took him to the local pub (the Fox and Fiddle) at midnight on his birthday for his first (legal) alcoholic beverage in a bar!

Then Ben ran away from home!

By that I mean he has found? an apartment? in the city. We’ll? miss? him? here;? however,? like? so? many? friends? here? at? the
Canadiana,? he? knows? that? he? is? welcome? to? drop? in? any? time!

In? fact,? he? already? has!? He? was? here? last? night? because? his? new? digs
didn’t? have? a? pillow.? We? loaned? him? one!

So Christina and Steve (Ben’s parents) if you are reading this, we’re still taking good care of your son! And we’ll try to keep you posted!

Oh yes, I almost forgot, Happy Birthday Ben!

Spring at Last!

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Well, it’s finally over! I can tell you with certainty that another winter is finally behind us! Weather patterns are changing thanks to Global Warming so the change of season is not as easy to? tell? when? winter? is? truly? over? as? it? once? was.

The temperatures for the past week have been consistentlyin double digits and next week it is expected to be above 20C all week! That’s Spring! Everyone’s spirit has been lifted by the warm weather and sunshine!

Toronto is a really good town, even on cold winter days such as last February – the coldest in almost three decades! But once the warmer weather arrives, Toronto becomes a GREAT city!

There are so many events put on by the city: Book Fairs with guest speakers like Steven King; free concerts at Harbourfront;? visiting? world-class? music? performers from U2 to the Barenaked Ladies;? a? free Folk? Festival;? and? Jazz? Festival;? and? Blues? Festival? etc.,? etc.

But most of all, it brings out all the beautiful people! During our dark and long,? long? winters? we? grow? accustomed? to? thick? heavy? coats? and? pants. Even? the? most? attractive? figures? are? heavily covered and bundled? up? to? resemble? the? “Michelin? Man”.? ? And, I kid you not, Toronto is the only North American city that women can walk the streets bear chested, no shirts required.?

We have officially entered the season of shorts and short skirts;? of? tank-tops? and? tube-tops! What’s? not? to? like?
