Canoe Trip in the Harbour

There is an “event” we try to put on every week at the hostel. It involves canoeing in Toronto Harbour.

These are not the typical and traditional Canadian one to three man 16’ trip canoes. They are what the natives called “War Canoes” and the Voyageurs called “Freighter Canoes”.

They hold a lot of people which is good if you are attacking an enemy. And can carry a lot of cargo which is good if you are transporting a lot of furs or trade goods. Toronto’s harbour has a rather unique feature.

There are a series of islands forming a public park. The islands are close together and are joined pedestrian footbridges that form a chain of water passages between the islands. The entire park stretches, at least, eight kilometers from end to end.

The tour begins at the Toronto waterfront where are intrepid canoeists board their boat and paddle a mile or so across the open water to the islands.

Upon reaching the islands/park they weave their way through the water passages between the islands past ducks, wild geese and swans. It really isn’t a lot f work either. With so many paddlers in each canoe you can maintain quite a good clip over the water.

The cost for the outing is about $15 which is very, very reasonable. This is also a typically Canadian outing; not to had anywhere else on earth.
