Wine & Cheese

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

On Wednesday evenings (at 8PM) the hostel has a Wine and Cheese party. It’s free for all guests and it is a introduction to Ontario wines grown in the Niagara Peninsula.

Long ago, Ontario wines were considered “undrinkable” and one French oenophile was moved to remark; “We do not make Whiskey; and you should not make Wine!”? Things have changed since those days!

Ontario wine producers have spent a lot of time and money into obtaining and growing the right grapes for our climate. The result has been the production of excellent wines that are winning acceptance and prizes all around the world!

So join us Wednesday evenings in our “Quiet Room” and judge for yourself. You’re in for a pleasant surprise!

Diana

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

People have a wager in the hostel about Diana. The fact is, no one has ever seen her without a smile on her face! That seems a little unusual for someone from “East” Germany!

She has been on a working/holiday and has been employed by our hostel for some months. And in that time no one has seen her without her trademark smile! She brightens up even the most gloomy day!

With winter well on its’ way here in Toronto, we’re glad that we’ll have Diana’s beautiful smile to warm up the coming cold winter weather!

Justine

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Justine is a young lady who currently lives and works in Chicago. Although she was born in the U.S.A., she was raised north of the 49th Parallel in Vancouver B.C.

She currently works in Chicago, the mid-western metropolis famous for such scoundrels as Al Capone and Jerry (Never Trust Anyone Over 30) Rubin and such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama.

Justine visits Toronto every month or so and always stays with us when not bunking in with friends. Her job with a U.S. Public Relations Firm brings her to our city to work with Ryerson University.

Toronto has strong connections with Chicago. For instance, the hit 2002 musical “Chicago” featuring the incomparable Catherine Zeta Jones in an Oscar winning performance? was filmed right her in Toronto. Both are Great Lakes Port cities and both experience hot, humid summers and cold snowy winters!

Both nations are holding Federal general elections this fall. Justine whom, in many ways is a daughter of both countries, is a backer of the Canadian Green Party of environmentally concerned citizens and in the U.S. she is a strong supporter of the phenomenal Democratic orator Barack Obama!

We Canadians are closely watching the U.S. elections as never before. If by some supreme miracle we are fortunate enough to witness the election of the first black man to the Presidency of the United States, we will really now know that there just might be, at long last, “a new day acomin’ down south”!
