Christmas 2009 at the Canadiana
Well, our Christmas celebration just seems to get better and better each year. One thing that is certain is that it definitely gets bigger and bigger with each passing year.
If you look back on our entry for our annual brunch/dinner in 2007, I believe you will find that we had about 80 guests for the meal.
Then, in 2008 we about 95 celebrate Christmas with us.
Teresa our Head of Houeskeeping prepares a lot of turkey with all the trimmings and a wonderful assortment of desserts! In 2008, Teresa cooked eight very large turkeys for the meal. There was just enough turkey to satisfy all!
There is always enough food to go around; you see, we’ve done this many times before. However, we always ask that you inform us of your intention to attend so we will know how much food will be needed.
This year (2009) we had 95 guests signal their intention to join us for a Christmas meal.
But we always had a few others pitch up unannounced in years past so we make a little extra food to accomodate them. This year it seemed it was going to ne a repeat of 2008 and was decided to prepare nine very large birds!
The extra guests straggled in as expexcted – a lot of them! (Some of our staff estimate that more than 110 people showed up prepared to eat!)
Our Toronto Hostel’s motto is: “It feels like home”! And we do our best to live up to those words. We would never even consider turning away guests, former guests or friends who have nowhere else to celebrate Christmas.
But we were in danger of running out of turkey before everyone had a portion. That would be a disaster!
But our noble staff members stepped up to the plate (or away form the plate, so to speak) and did without any turkey dinner! (Bless ‘em all!)
Our staff didn’t mind making the sacrifice. You see, the hostel had a staff dinner the week before at Alice Fazooli’s! (Check out the previous entry.)
Anyhow we thank you all for joining us at Christmas and wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
- Your friends, the staff of Canadiana Backpackers, Toronto.

I’m sorry I couldn’t make it this year……I miss the Canadiana hostel. I always have so much fun there. I hope to return next year.
Christmas in the hostel was absolutly brilliant, it was a home away from home, I didnt miss home as much i thought I would, didnt miss it at all actually haha (jokes). Yes the dinner was gorgeous, did the trick after Christmas eve, would reccomend it to anyone for Christmas.
Christmas Dinner was awesome! Everyone enjoyed Theresa´s brilliant food and the lovely warm atmosphere. It was well hosted and all were made to feel very welcome. Thanks Canadiana, I´ll never forget it
Dinner was just as amazing as Teresa!! At 29 this is my first Christmas away from my just turned 10 year old son and I was slightly down the staff and all my friends were amazing and this was one of the best Christmas’s I have had. I will be back next year for this regardless of living here or not. Who knows I just may be working here too!!
I have been here in toronto nearly six months now and have loved spending time in the Canadiana. Christmas dinner was no exception. Theresa is one of a kind. A fabulous woman and prepared a first class dinner. Thanks to all the guys at the hostel for making Christmas one to remember (well up until midnight anyways haha)and cherish.
